ADHD Assessment Process

The assessment can be completed over video link for clients anywhere in the UK. Taking place over 2-3 sessions, encompassing interviews with both the client and those who knew them in their younger years I provide a comprehensive report and diagnosis as part of the package.

Components of an ADHD Assessment

After an initial free telephone consultation, clients will be asked to complete a set of validated screening questionnaires. These will help us identify areas which match the diagnostic criteria for ADHD and those areas which require further investigation. They are as follows:

  • Wender Utah Screening Questionnaire
  • Weiss Functional Impairment Rating Scale Self-Report (WFIRS-S)
  • Autism Quotient
  • Adult ADHD Self-Report Screen
  • Impact of Events Scale
  • GAD-7 and PHQ-9

The next step is a comprehensive clinical interview, during which I gather detailed information about the individual’s history, symptoms, and functioning across various domains, such as work and relationships. This can take 1 to 2 hours.

After this, feedback from family members or close contacts who knew the client is sought via further validated questionnaires and an interview of 30 minutes to an hour to provide a fuller picture of the individual’s behavior in different settings.

Final Report

Upon completing the ADHD assessment, I will produce a detailed report that includes the diagnosis, if applicable, based on the DSM-V criteria. This comprehensive document will outline the findings of the assessment and can be utilized for various purposes, such as discussions with employers, educational institutions, and healthcare providers like GPs or psychiatrists. The report will serve as a valuable resource for clients, enabling them to advocate for necessary accommodations in the workplace or academic settings, as well as facilitating informed conversations about their mental health needs with medical professionals.

Importance of ADHD Assessments in Adults in the UK

ADHD assessments for adults in the UK are crucial for adults who may have undiagnosed ADHD leading to difficulties in personal, academic, and professional areas of life. Recognizing ADHD can provide individuals with a better understanding of their behaviours and challenges, paving the way for effective management strategies. A formal assessment can lead to appropriate interventions, such as therapy or medication, which can significantly improve quality of life, enhance productivity, and foster better relationships. Furthermore, raising awareness about adult ADHD can reduce stigma and encourage others to seek help.

Challenges in Accessing ADHD Assessments

Despite the importance of these assessments, accessing them can be fraught with challenges in the UK. One of the major obstacles is the long waiting times associated with NHS services. Many adults find themselves waiting several months or even years for an assessment, which can exacerbate existing difficulties and lead to further frustration and anxiety. The demand for ADHD services has surged, but the resources available to meet this demand have not kept pace. This creates a significant barrier for those seeking help, forcing many to seek alternatives or forgo assessments altogether.
